ABC’s The Middle Cast and Set Visit
Growing up in the Midwest, I can really relate to ABC’s hit show The Middle. I see this every day where I live in Missouri. It shows a real family with real struggles with a real “lived in” home. It’s an excellent show for the whole family! I got the opportunity to visit the set of The Middle while I was in Los Angeles and we even got a visit from some of the cast members while on set!
The Middle is about married couple, . Frankie is a middle class mom and wife living in the middle of the country, rapidly approaching middle age. We think that makes for the perfect title, The Middle.
Julie Fanton, set decorator for The Middle, gave us a tour of the set the Heck’s call home. We were able to walk through the home of the Heck family and see just how they live. I’d call it a normal household… bills on the table, fingerprints on the walls, laundry to be done, messy kids’ rooms. Every little detail was perfectly done to make it a normal home just like we see every day. It’s a home of a working mom juggling life. When you walk through the doors of the home you even get that lived-in smell.
Fanton said she does most of her shopping for set decor at Target, Kohls and even the Salvation Army. She said you can find amazing things at thrift stores. I’ve been in a few thrift stores shopping for costume props and you definitely can find a little bit of everything. I really think the lived-in smell probably comes from her thrift store finds.
During our visit we had the opportunity to meet with cast members Mike Heck (Neil Flynn) and his on-camera sons Axl (Charlie McDermott) and Brick (Atticus Shaffer). They were so nice and welcoming. We got the chance to ask them a few questions about how it was working on the show together. I was most surprised by Charlie McDermott. His character on the show is a very popular, athletic teenage son. In person he was so quiet. Jack McBrayer surprised us with a visit while we were on set. He was super nice and funny. Of course, you probably know him from 30 Rock but you have to check out The Middle for his funny character as Frankie’s boss.
Be sure to check out The Middle Wednesday nights on ABC at 8/7c. I got the chance to pre-screen tonight’s episode. It is so funny! Sue goes to prom! Find out if she has a date and what she’ll be wearing! Learn more about tonight’s episode:
THE MIDDLE – “The Walk” – After bumping into some old acquaintances on a walk around the neighborhood, Frankie and Mike realize that they are more interesting and charming with them than they are with each other and search for a way to remedy the situation. Meanwhile, Sue ends up with multiple dates to the prom because she is too nice to turn down any of the boys who asked her, and Brick enlists Axl’s aid in preparing an “outside the box” book report, on “The Middle,” WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26 (8:00-8:30 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
